Located just East of Billings, Montana, Lockwood is a rural Montana Community with approximately 8,400 residents.
While Lockwood has its own School District #26, Grade schools, grades K-8th and is considered by many one of the best elementary schools in the State. High school students generally attend Senior or Skyview High Schools for their continued education but few also attend West High School in Billings. Lockwood residents have voiced priorities in the area whether it be constructing a new High School or incorporating the area. Ultimately, Lockwood residents look forward to the future day that it can become thier own city but future roadblocks will need to be eliminated in order for Lockwood to even be able to vote. In the past, Lockwood residents have petitioned the Montana Legislature for changes to Montana Law. In the future, lockwood residents will be given the opportunity to vote on the issue, but currently cannot as current Montana law does not allow at this time.
Lockwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Yellowstone County, Montana, United States. The population was 4,306 at the 2000 census. Lockwood is a suburb of Billings. Annexation of Lockwood to Billings has been studied; however, the Billings City Council Annexation Plan of June 2009 states that the city has no plans to annex Lockwood in the foreseeable future.
Geography
Lockwood is located at (45.807504, -108.423600).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.9 square miles (20.4 km²), of which, 7.5 square miles (19.3 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km²) of it (5.46%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,306 people, 1,599 households, and 1,178 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 577.5 people per square mile (222.9/km²). There were 1,676 housing units at an average density of 224.8/sq mi (86.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.06% White, 0.46% African American, 2.67% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 2.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.74% of the population.
Lockwood has 4 other Districts within the area. The Water and Sewer District which over sees the Water Treatment Plant. The water system for Lockwood is continuing to be completed each year. As more grants are awarded, Lockwood continues to be the beneficiary of the state and federal funds available as well as the local funds.
The transportation district is presently involved in a traffic study because of course as Lockwood grows, traffic grows.
The Irrigation District is busy in the summer months providing water to the local irrigation ditches.
Lockwood also has its own Fire Department and they are active in what happens in Lockwood and because of our hills and trees are always monitoring the fire dangers. Lockwood also has a number of businesses such as restaurants, casinos, lumber yards, IGA grocery store, truck stops and truck washes, fast food businesses, a hardware store, assitance living locations, veterinary services for both large and small animals, vehicle and auto repair shops, video store, gas station, exxonmobil refinery and contractors in and around the lockwood Montana area.
